Great camping locations near Merced, California

The city of Merced isn’t the Gateway to Yosemite for nothing. An approximately two-hour drive from here will get you to Yosemite National Park where you can revel in the splendor of the Great Outdoors. But ye olde Yosemite isn’t the only place where you can go camping.

Listed below are some hidden gems in and around Merced where you can reflect, enjoy, experience thrills, be wowed, and bond with your favorite people while surrounded by nature.

  1. George J. Hatfield State Recreation Area
    George J. Hatfield State Recreation Area is a little spot of nature within Merced’s city limits. Located by the banks of the Merced River, it is frequented by residents who love the cool waters of the river and the complete amenities within the camping grounds. There is also the option to go boating, geocaching, picnicking, and hiking here. You can reserve for camping stays online for up to six months ahead of time.   2. McConnell State Recreation Area
    A little farther northeast of George J. Hatfield is another campsite by the banks of the Merced River. It provides great camping spots for visitors as well as a convenient book-online system. Enjoyable activities here include fishing (most common are catfish, black bass, and perch), picnicking, swimming, and boating. There are also play areas for the children and a beach area to enjoy.
  3. Turlock Lake State Recreation Area
    Further out northeast, you will find this small but beautiful inland body of water called Turlock Lake. The state recreation park built along its banks has 59 campsites. The place is ideal for those eager to go on water-related forms of recreation or sport. Seven of these campsites can be reserved on a first-come-first-served basis while one is a hike and bike camping area. Peak seasons here are from April to September so reserve as early as you can.
  4. San Luis Reservoir State Recreation Area
    Still within the confines of Merced County toward the Diablo Range is an artificial lake called the San Luis Reservoir. It forms part of the San Luis Reservoir State Recreation Area. Four of its camping grounds are:

    • The Basalt Campground
    • San Luis Campground
    • Medeiros Campground
    • Los Banos Creek Campground

    All four camping sites have their respective amenities with The Basalt Campground having the most complete facilities like running water on faucets and spaces for RVs. The lake is ideal for fishing and trails here can be traveled on by foot or on horseback.

  5. Millerton Lake State Recreation Area
    Found in Friant in nearby Fresno County is another artificial lake fed by the waters of the San Joaquin River. The Millerton Lake is the centerpiece of the Millerton Lake State Recreation Area. The nearby hills provide many opportunities for hiking while the waters are great for boating, water sports, swimming, snorkeling, and fishing. Among the wildlife here are deer and badgers, but the animal campers hope to get a glimpse of is the bald eagle. This magnificent bird has made the area its habitat.
