Los Banos

Los Banos is fast-growing city in Merced County of the San Joaquin Valley. Home to around 39,180 people, this unique city provides residents with easy access to neighboring communities and cities.

Los Banos’ history begins in 1805, when Gabriel Moraga and his Spanish Cavalry arrived to explore the San Joaquin Valley. Years later, Spanish missionary Padre Felipe Arroyo de la Cuesta found pools of water that flowed into the San Joaquin Valley during one of his visits to the area. Because the pools of water resembled a bath, Padre Felipe named the area “Los Banos”, which is Spanish for “the baths.”

It was only in 1871 when Los Banos started to really develop, after Henry Miller formed the San Joaquin River Canal and Irrigation Company and introduced the valley to rice, cotton, and alfalfa crops.

  • Today, Los Banos is a vibrant community with a strong Spanish and Portuguese influence and a family-friendly atmosphere. The city makes sure to offer a high quality of life, all while honoring its past and moving towards the future. Los Banos is served by the Los Banos Municipal Airport, a public-use airfield with just one paved runway. The airport is used to get to various destinations within California, and out to Nevada, and Oregon.
