Why Social Distancing in Merced County is Important Against COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

Times are tough. The world is being hit by a pandemic known as COVID-19. This virus is transmitted through the respiratory system, and has similar symptoms to the flu, but has the potential to be more dangerous and lead to death.

Statistically speaking, many of you reading this will not die. Many people who contract the virus will live. However, as current predictions show, 3-4% of people won’t live. This percentage includes elders and those with weakened immune systems.

We have a glimpse into the future of the United States by looking at how China and Italy have been affected. Those places have been shut down, with borders closed, and Italy’s health care system is crumbling down. The United States is two weeks behind with the Coronavirus, but if we don’t begin the act of Social Distancing, our health care systems will fail.

The goal of social distancing is to limit the transition of the virus. Many young adults have the idea that only the elderly can get the illness or only those with weakened immune systems, but that is not the case. Even with a strong immune system, you become a carrier of the virus and put everyone around you at risk. Many are avoiding social distancing and still attend events that contain more than 10 people, thus risking contracting the virus and spreading it to their friends and family.

There’s a limited number of beds and patients a hospital can attend. We think we’re out of masks to protect us from the virus, but medical professionals are also running low on masks due to the high demand. At the current rate the virus is spreading, doctors are forced onto a position to pick who deserves treatment, and who don’t, and this will result in the death of some.

By practicing social distancing, we begin to flatten out the curve. This means that the spreading of the coronavirus starts slowing down, and becomes more manageable for doctors to treat patients. We can’t fully stop the virus from spreading, but we lower the chances of contraction to those with weakened immune systems.

Currently, Los Angeles County, Fresno County, and 6 Bay Area counties are locked down and are promoting social distancing to protect their residents. Merced County will be following up in a couple of days. This doesn’t mean go rushing to the store and purchase all the toilet paper. Go to the store and stock up on food to keep you locked at home. If you run out of food, stores will remain open and you can shop for more groceries, but the objective is to isolate yourself from the general public for 2 weeks to ensure the illness passes.
